  • How difficult is it to change an alternator belt?

I have a 1998 BMW Z3. Is it difficult to change the alternator belt? I really don't know anything about car repair, but I'd like to avoid paying a mechanic to do something if I could easily do it myself.

If you have any how-to links, I'd greatly appreciate 'em.

thanks! How difficult is it to change an alternator belt?just google for %26quot;bimmer forums%26quot; or similar items. There are a bunch out there and very helpful. I do know those engines do have a certain technique to replacing them, but most BMW's are fairly simple. (I am not sure of the exact proceedures for a z3) They are just very different from US cars. How difficult is it to change an alternator belt?Ok , first its not the timing belt... your car has an auxillary belt driven alternator. Its not that difficult to do, just find the belt tensioner, loosen it and that should give you enough slack to pull it out. Beyond that I would suggest going to a parts house and buy a haynes or chilton's manual for your car. These will help you do almost anything you want to do to your car. hope this helps....good luck.

also, i hope you will change the water pump, all external drive belts, cam shaft seal, crank shaft seal, re-fill new coolant, and a new valve cover gasket.

That is a timing belt JOB. not just replacing the belt. That does you no good when the cam shaft seal goes bad and starts leaking on the exhaust and giving you alot of smoke or if the water pump goes bad, then you have to take ALL THAT TIME TO GO BACK AND DO IT AGAIN, when you could have done it all at once because everything is right next to each other. that is several hundred dollars at the mechanic all over again.

Okay i bought my car last year and it was 152k miles. The guy before me bought it when it was 122k miles and never did any repair with the car. When is the time to change your timing belt?

I have bought my 1994 honda civic in 2005 from the dealership. I figured maybe before I bought it maybe they replaced all that stuff already. I have been driving all this time and I am kinda worried because I have to commute, a hour to school 3 days a week. I didn't want my car to just die becasue the timming belt snaps and me being stuck. I probably put about a little over 30,000 miles in to it already. When should I change the timming belt? When is the time to change your timing belt? The Timing Belt replacement interval for a Honda of that vintage is every 60k miles. If you don't know when it was last done, do it. Many, mmany poeple NEVER change the Timing Belt because of the cost so there is the possibility yours is original!

Given the age of the vehicle while your in there I would recommend replacing the Timing Belt Tensioner, any idler pulley's (these all come together in a %26quot;Timing Belt Component Kit) and the Water Pump, which is driven by the T-belt as well. This is all just preventive maintenance but cheaper to do while your already in there than later on.

Your Honda has what is called an interference engine in which, should the T-belt brake, pistons and valves will come together in nasty and expensive ways. An ounce of prevention...

I've had 2 Honda civics. Both failed their belts right at about 90000 miles. (I know, I know...) FIrst one happened right as I was getting divorced and the second one happened at the same time my business was failing. First time I got lucky, my mechanic put a new belt on and it ran ok. He said that happens about 20% of the time. Haven't had the second fixed yet. I have figured out that to verify that the belt is what failed, all I had to do was pop the oil filler cap, and look at the cam with a flashlight while somebody else cranks the engine. When is the time to change your timing belt?i own a repair shop and on any car i change them at every sixty thousand miles whether they need it or not, that's whats recommended and if you change them at that mileage you don't have to worry about it,i make it a rule to change all the belts every sixty thousand miles, and this way you can drive it instead of worrying about a belt that might break on it or something.good luck with it hope this helps. When is the time to change your timing belt? You need to check the interval of change first. If it's 100,000 miles, and you're on 110,000, the time is NOW. Some cars will go a long time, others only 40,000 or so. I doubt a dealership would have replaced it just because, but you'd have to ask them if they did, depending on the mileage on the car. All cars are different so there are no convenient answers, except to find out what engine you have, the year, model, then you can find out the timing belt replacement interval from a dealership or reference book. When is the time to change your timing belt?50,000 miles is a good time to change the belt.

While your at it, change the water pump at the same

time, since you have to remove it to get to the belt.

Relatively inexpensive and good preventive measure.

  • Is it better to change the serpentine belt on a 97 Nissan Sentra or have someone else do it?

I had my oil changed (usually do it myself) and the guys pointed out my serpentine belt is severely frayed. Yikes! Wondering how hard it is for an inexperienced tinkerer to change it themselves. Is it better to change the serpentine belt on a 97 Nissan Sentra or have someone else do it?You need to take your business elsewhere for your oil changes. The Sentradoesn't have a Serpentine belt. Look down there and count the number of belts on your engine.

A Serpentine belt is one belt that runs all your accesories like your power steering pump, A/C compressor and alternator.

You most likely have two or three belts on your engine.

As far as changing a belt on a FWD vehicle, if you have never done anything like it, I suggest having someone you know that can do it, do it for you.

Also, if a belt on the front of your engine breaks, it will not damage your engine, nor will it bend valves. It'll just make a bad sound, and your steering, A/C or alternator will be affected. Only the timing belt/chain, which ever the case, will cause internal damage to the engine. Is it better to change the serpentine belt on a 97 Nissan Sentra or have someone else do it?difficult, and you may damage the engine if you get it on wrong.

And you may damage the engine if it breaks while driving, so don't wait. • How do you change the serpentine/drive belt on a Mazda6?

I had no problem changing the belts on my old Mustang, but I now have a Mazda6 2.3L and the belt is realy close to the engine. Any idea which pulley is the tension one. Or if it's even worth changing it yourself? I'm trying to avoid paying $80 bucks labor for a $25 dollar belt. How do you change the serpentine/drive belt on a Mazda6?Some of them can be tough to thread around all the pulleys without raising the front of the car so you can get under the engine to position the belt. Then you need car ramps and jack stands for safety. One of the pulleys is the tensioner pulley which probably has a 1/2 inch (or similar metric) drive insert for a breaker bar to release its tension. How do you change the serpentine/drive belt on a Mazda6?there should be a diagraphm under the hood to show you the routing of the belt, don't try taking the belt off until you have the diagraphm or you will be pulling your hair out, once you find the tensioner it's a simple process, just release the tension on it and you will see the belt frees right up so you can take it off and then you just follow the diagraphm to route the new one, pull the tensioner back again and when the belt is where you want it just release the tensioner and your done.

Timing belts don't generally scream, they are internal and if not working, your vehicle won't run. Perhaps they said serpentine belt, more likely, which can get glazed and cracked and slip and scream, louder as you accelerate.

How hard is it to change the timing belt in a 2003 Hyundai Accent?

I am fairly good in the garage but have never worked on anything serious on my Hyundai- just regular maintenance. It has just rolled over to 60k on the mileage and that it when it is suggested to change the timing belt. The dealership wants $500 to do it. Is it worth it? The timing belt itself is only $35- so the labor has to be extensive. Is it worth it to take it in or is investing the time to do it myself the way to go?How hard is it to change the timing belt in a 2003 Hyundai Accent? There are simple things that everyone can do however there are complicated repairs/maintenance that requires finesse and knowledge. Timing belt replacement is one of the tough ones. $ 500 to replace the belt its too much Labor should not exceed $ 300 with LTS (Labor Time Standard Guide - Mitchell Book) allowing 2.4 hr to replace the belt. Multiply that by shop hourly rate and that should be your labor dollars to pay. You can negotiate the price or choose a different shop. Its worth to let a qualified technician to replace the belt for you. Like the previous guy said, one wrong move and with first crank on the engine and you will be seeking for major repairs. How hard is it to change the timing belt in a 2003 Hyundai Accent? You need to remember a few things when doing a cam belt. Mainly, if you cock it up you car is dead as there is no clearance between the valve and the pistons. In the first stroke you'll bemd the valves if you too far advanced. My company has just invested 3000 in a cam belt locking tool set. (massive thing it is lol) you might even find you need to buy a sprocket locking set which is very expensive. lay off the dealer, in my garage i'd charge 260 for that. just make sure where ever you go they will give you warranty. Plus that price is prob belt only, you'll be wanting to do the tensioner as well, get a price on that then the $500 will seem a bit more value for money.

Is it necessary to change your other belts with your timing belt?

I have a 99 Acura Integra LS with 101,000 on it. Some repair shops say that they go ahead and change the other belts while others don't. Is this a necessary procedure? Also, would you recommend taking my car to a Honda/Acura dealership to change the timing belt or is it okay to use any repair shop certified with ASE mechanics? Is it necessary to change your other belts with your timing belt?Necessary? No. But since the labor is essentially %26quot;free%26quot; (those belts have to come off regardless) it is not a bad idea to change them with the Timing Belt. If you change them later, it will cost more. If the belts are more than 4 years old or worse, original, I would definately say it is a good idea, but you don't have to.

On that diagram it will tell you which pulley is the automatic tensioner. Sometimes the tensioner is hard to reach and a serpentine belt tool is needed but if the tensioner can be reached it usually needs to be rotated counter clockwise to relieve pressure on the belt. Once the pressure is relieved slip the belt off. Follow the belt routing diagram to install the new belt on the correct pulleys. New York City Honda Dealer Says $900 to change timing belt?

We have a 1990 Honda Accord. In 2000 when the car had 10,000 miles we had the timing belt replaced. Now the car has 50,000 miles and the Honda dealership is suggesting we change the timing belt. Two questions: a) does the timing belt have to be changed because it has been 7 years and b) is $900 excessive for this? Thanks in advance.New York City Honda Dealer Says $900 to change timing belt?it is 400 bucks including waterpump and drive belts. and yes 7 yrs is long enought to get it done as the rubber starts to rot.

I would change them at least every 60k to ensure it does not break. labor wise i could see $500.... have them break down the price and shop around... you can also find shops that specialize in hondas and use honda parts but the labor should cost less than at the dealer....New York City Honda Dealer Says $900 to change timing belt?I'm not sure what this would cost in New York, but I also have a 1990 Honda--I live in the midwest, but when I had our timing belt changed, it only cost about $200 max. I don't have the manual on hand, but I would suggest checking your manual to see what the actual schedule for changing the timing belt is. You've only put on 40,000 miles, seems pretty low mileage. I think I got about 70-90,000 before changing mine...although if there's any question it's always better to get it changed. If it breaks while driving the force of it can damage other more costly systems.New York City Honda Dealer Says $900 to change timing belt?I had the timing belt/water pump/and pulley's replaced and it was 1200 on my prelude...and i didnt do it at a dealer...900 seems fair...really good, actuallyNew York City Honda Dealer Says $900 to change timing belt?at a dealer it will always cost you more than a normal garage, but its safer to do it by a dealer so if you have the money go for it.

Why would you consider violating the warranty? You do not know for sure that the belt is, in fact, not straight -- or slipping or that the belt is the cause of something burning within the machine.

To protect yourself, the warranty, and the machine --- take it to the service technician. You spent good $$$$ for the machine . . . why throw the investment down the tubes by messing with it?

How to change a belt on a JD riding mower...?

Does anyone know how to change the belt on a John Deere L130 riding lawn mower? The manual is very vague, and includes nothing on this. The belt has come off and seems WAY to big. Anything helpful would be much appreciated!!!!How to change a belt on a JD riding mower...?Depends on what belt has snapped. The mower deck may have to be removed to change the transaxle belt. The deck may stay in place to change the mower belt. Best to change the belt at the deck's lowest setting. How to change a belt on a JD riding mower...?take it to a Lowes store,, they now sell and service them.. they may have updated manuals and you can make a copy from them! they may even help you put it on if you buy a belt from them. you can also go to john deers web site and look for updated manuals or ask them on-line!!!!!!!How to change a belt on a JD riding mower...?As complicated as it seems it's not.

All you have to do is write down step by step each clip and fastener you take loose to remove that deck if you need too because all models are different and some you just lower the deck all the way down and reach in and change the belts.

Now as for removing the deck it's basic common sense.

You can visually see what needs to be removed to drop that deck. Write each step as you go this way you know where it all goes back.

A friend of mine had a cell phone camera that he used and took pictures before taking it apart to put another belt on.

I have a GE Gas dryer and I need to change the belt but don't know how. Any ideas?

My dryer is an old one; it may be from before 1980. It was in my mobile home when I moved in, with no owner's manual. The model number is DDG7188PKLWH. Does anyone know where I can get info on how to change the belt, or have any tips for me?I have a GE Gas dryer and I need to change the belt but don't know how. Any ideas? This is a simple repair. On the backside of the dryer, there should be an access panel you can open by removing screws.

The belt simply loops over the dryer drum, over one pulley that provides tension, and around the pulley on the drive motor.

Locating the correct belt is more difficult. Sears has service centers locally and they sell parts for all makes and models.I have a GE Gas dryer and I need to change the belt but don't know how. You can do it.I have a GE Gas dryer and I need to change the belt but don't know how. Any ideas?Find the model # then go to GE appliances on line. Open the front door remove four Phillips head screws holding the top to the front lip. Raise the top and support it so it wont fall. At the bottom of the front section near the floor you will find one 5/16 sheet metal screw on each side. Loosen but do not remove these screws.

Back at the top, look inside where the front meets the main cabinet. There is another 5/16%26quot; screw on each side.Remove

them. The front will now pull away and lift off the bottom screws. Slide the new belt(Grooved side against the drum)around the drum. You will see the ware mark on the drum to know how to position it. Put the front back on. tighten screws. Put the top down and fasten with the four phillip screws. Remove the rear cover at the bottom. DO NOT THROW AWAY THE BRICK INSIDE. Take the belt coming from your left and put the back side of the belt over the top of the plastic pulley(Spring tension into the pulley arm until the belt will reach around the motor pulley) slowly release the pulley to take up the slack in the belt. Put the back on. Start the dryer. Have a beer. Enjoy the game.

I am considering buying a second hand Rover 114GSi with 75,000 miles on the clock and was just wondering about when the recommended time for a CAM belt change would be? Also any reports on whether or not these are reliable cars would be most appreciated! At what mileage/age would you suggest a CAM belt change on a Rover 114GSi?If you don't know when the belt was changed last then change it asap. And don't worry about buying a rover jut don't buy a VW golf, not that i'd like to stereotype anybody but they seem to be driven by over opinionated prats. :@)

As for engine problems they are about average but don't use crap oil as it gunge's up and goes creamy with condesation in the breather pipes, which is then confused with a head gasket problem and end up costing you a packet for no reason at all.If there is coolant loss or overheating then start to worry about the headgasket. At what mileage/age would you suggest a CAM belt change on a Rover 114GSi?if its not broke don't fix itAt what mileage/age would you suggest a CAM belt change on a Rover 114GSi?40000 MILESAt what mileage/age would you suggest a CAM belt change on a Rover 114GSi?The Rover is a fine automobile. The belt should have been changed at 60k.At what mileage/age would you suggest a CAM belt change on a Rover 114GSi?STOP....i would never reccomend anyone buying a rover.rovers are driven by doddery fools, wearing caps and nodding churchill dogs in rear windows.seriously,i have never and i mean never seen a rover driver who doesn't make a mistake whilst driving,i avoid them at all costs,if behind me i stop to let them get away,in front of me, i slow right down,in car parks i never park near them and when they are driving near me i give great caution.WOW thats the first time i put that in writing, maybe it's a personal thing with me.i drive a vw golf.

cam belts need changing every 60k at least. At what mileage/age would you suggest a CAM belt change on a Rover 114GSi?the belt should be changed at 60,000, even if the seller tells you it has been done get a mechanic to pull the covers back just to verify that it has been changed. And no they are not good engines they give head gasket problems all the time, on saying that the car should be very cheep so it may be worth taking a chance on.At what mileage/age would you suggest a CAM belt change on a Rover 114GSi?every 60 or 70 thousand miles . they are ok for shopping and small journeys but long journeys are a bit of drag obviously they are rovers so build quality isn't up to much they ok bab !At what mileage/age would you suggest a CAM belt change on a Rover 114GSi?With 75K it is overdue and my advise would be with any car that you do not know the history %26quot;get it changed%26quot; irrespective of the mileage and recommendations

If you buy it and don't bother changing it as a matter of course and have the misfortune to have the thing break and bend valves and I can assure you it will. You will be in for a costing of 1000-1500 plus so you see the cost of changing it before this happens at about 200 is not too bad

I got 2 question when you change your belt tensioner ,you also need to replaced the Idler Pulley?i agree with ivan, with the belt off move and spin the idler, if it feels dry or growley or has play replace it, also are you referring to the pulley on the tensioner or the stand along pulley, the one on the tensioner will come with one, gates makes a great choice.I got 2 question when you change your belt tensioner ,you also need to replaced the Idler Pulley?Only replace parts that need replacing. With a cold engine remove the belt and shake the idler, any shake or squeal, replace it. Otherwise ignore it, it goes away.
