How do you change a serpentine belt on a 1998 Chevy S10?
My serpentine belt broke yesterday, and I heard it's not that hard to change. I changed one a long time ago on a older smaller car, does anyone know is it easy? I have a 1998 BMW Z3. Is it difficult to change the alternator belt? I really don't know anything about car repair, but I'd like to avoid paying a mechanic to do something if I could easily do it myself.

Its not that difficult to do, just find the belt tensioner, loosen it and that should give you enough slack to pull it out. Beyond that I would suggest going to a parts house and buy a haynes or chilton's manual for your car. These will help you do almost anything you want to do to your car. hope this helps....good luck.

That is a timing belt JOB. not just replacing the belt. That does you no good when the cam shaft seal goes bad and starts leaking on the exhaust and giving you alot of smoke or if the water pump goes bad, then you have to take ALL THAT TIME TO GO BACK AND DO IT AGAIN, when you could have done it all at once because everything is right next to each other. that is several hundred dollars at the mechanic all over again.

Most of the major brands do sell a kit that has rollers with the belt and idler. If you can get this, do it. Its a good preventative step while you already have the dryer apart. Clean out the lint buildup while you have the dryer apart too.

Put the back on. Start the dryer. Have a beer. Enjoy the game.

With a cold engine remove the belt and shake the idler, any shake or squeal, replace it. Otherwise ignore it, it goes away.

REMOVAL
CAUTION: DO NOT LET TENSIONER ARM SNAP BACK TO THE FREEARM POSITION, SEVER DAMAGE MAY OCCUR TO THE TENSIONER.
Belt tension is not adjustable. Belt adjustment is maintained by an automatic ( spring load ) belt tensioner.
Disconnect negative battery cable from battery.
Rotate belt tensioner until it contacts it's stop. Remove belt, then slowly rotate the tensioner into the freearm position. Belt Routing - 4.7L
INSTALLATION
Belt tension is not adjustable. Belt adjustment is maintained by an automatic ( spring load ) belt tensioner.
Check condition of all pulleys
CAUTION: When installing the serpentine accessory drive belt, the belt MUST be routed correctly. If not, the engine may overheat due to the water pump rotating in the wrong direction Belt Routing - 4.7L
Install new belt Belt Routing - 4.7L Route the belt around all pulleys except the idler pulley. Rotate the tensioner arm until it contacts it's stop position. Route the belt around the idler and slowly let the tensioner rotate into the belt. Make sure the belt is seated onto all pulleys.
With the drive belt installed, inspect the belt wear indicator Accessory Drive Belt Wear Indicator - 4.7L Engine On 4.7L Engines only, the gap between the tang and the housing stop ( measurement A ) must not exceed 24 mm (.94 inches) If the measurement exceedes this specification replace the serpentine accessory drive belt.
