How soon do I really need to change my car's timing belt?

My car's manual recommends a timing belt replaced at 105,000 miles and I am now at about 108,000. How soon do I really need to change the belt? Am I on 'borrowed' time? Or will I probably be fine for a while since it's not an exact science that the belts will fail after 105,000 miles. How soon do I really need to change my car's timing belt? Why would you want to stretch your luck? Do you have any idea what the big buck cost would be should the belt break?

Jot this down as a serious consideration when buying your next car. Don't buy a car with old fashioned cost cutting technology such as a timing belt. Timing chains last 250,000 - 500,000 miles. How soon do I really need to change my car's timing belt?Do it soon b/c you don't want it to snap and when your car is still running the engine can get major damage. Then it'll cost more to fix your car and replace the timing belt. How soon do I really need to change my car's timing belt? Most people (i know) gets them changed around 60 or 70,000.How soon do I really need to change my car's timing belt?um well that depends......some cars will actually last 200k+ on original timing belt......but usually those are cars that are driven well ( no playing just driving.....no sudden stops no spinning tires in parking lots) ect.....

my honest advice would b to change ur timing belt now unless u have the money for a new engine since that is what will need to b replaced if u don't..........

i have seen tons of timing belts actually fail pre 105k due to poor maintenance and rough driving....so basically unless ur a little old lady that does 10 under the speed limit and has oil changed at 3k exactly....then ur driving on borrowed time....How soon do I really need to change my car's timing belt? You should do it as soon as possible. If it breaks, it will cause a lot of upper engine damage.

Hope this helps. How soon do I really need to change my car's timing belt?Well that depends on whether your car has an interference or non interference engine. SOME ENGINES WILL GET DAMAGED AND SOME WILL NOT if the timing belt goes bad

If it is an interference engine (where the valves actually open in the same path of the piston) then you absolutely should change your timing belt. If it fails, there will be huge amounts of damage to valves, lifters, etc and require very expensive repairs.

If your car has a non interference engine and the timing belt goes bad, then there will be little additional damage and you would simply get a new belt and maybe water pump installed. In this case you can delay getting it replaced.

If you don't know which is which, post the type of car, year and size engine and I will try and follow up to let you know. How soon do I really need to change my car's timing belt?100,000 is an Industry standard. Violation of this is begging to spend many dollars. Some cars OK to lose belt, no problem. Some cars cost a whole lot of money losing belt. All cars are not the same. hope this helps, luv ser

Thanks for the help. When to change timing belt for Mitsubishi Lancer?Yes, the 2.0 4 Cyl engine in the 2004 uses a belt.

It needs to be replaced every 60K.

Will it break tomorrow? Probably not. If it does, it will destroy your engine. Is that a chance you want to take? Probably not. When to change timing belt for Mitsubishi Lancer?check your manual it should give you a recomendation. No manual? Call a dealership. you do own a phone right? When to change timing belt for Mitsubishi Lancer?Usually around 100 k. If its a 4 cylinder, it should have a rubber one. V6 %26amp; up, Chain one.

Hope this helps! When to change timing belt for Mitsubishi Lancer? You most likely have a belt instead of a chain. Check your owners manual or with the dealer. They are usually changed anywhere from 80 to 120KWhen to change timing belt for Mitsubishi Lancer?I usually change timing belts at 80k 60k is great.

This is a form of preventive maintenance.

    To prevent failure.

    Belts stretch.

As well as drive a plastic water pump usually.

Most imports you have to change the timing belt and water pump at the same time.

Now if the timing belt fails you will have pistons hit vavles.

Usually the result is a new engine. When to change timing belt for Mitsubishi Lancer?Sometimes never only if you have trouble. Are you and if not do not worry

When should I change the timing belt on a 1998 Crown Victoria?

The car runs excellently. I have no problems with the car at all. I just use it every day for about 50 miles, and on weekends for about 250 miles. I just want to treat her right. When should I change the belt to avoid a sudden breakdown? When should I change the timing belt on a 1998 Crown Victoria?no belt and timing chains can last the life of a vehicle i've never changed one in any car i have ownedWhen should I change the timing belt on a 1998 Crown Victoria?Duh! The Ford Crown Victoria has a chain driven cam. There is no timing belt!

The timing chain will begin to get a little sloppy between 80000 and 100000 miles and I would recommend changing the timing chain around 100000 miles. When should I change the timing belt on a 1998 Crown Victoria? My rule of thumb is 100K, although some people suggest changing it sooner.

I don't think the '98 Crown Vic has an 'interference' engine (meaning that if the timing belt snapped, it wouldn't be in danger of bending/breaking valves, or punching holes in pistons), so it isn't nearly as important as on some newer cars.

It's not that hard to do yourself if you are fairly mechanically inclined. I usually suggest changing the water pump while you are in there.

My belt tensioner is making noise.Do you have to change the belt tensioner or you could change the pulley?

My belt tensioner is making noise.Do you have to change the belt tensioner or you could change the pulley only? The other question is my power steering pump is also making noise it need to be replaced soon! What do I have to change when changing the power steering pump? Do the power steering hose need to be change also? It my first time doing this if you can give me more information, I would really appreciated Thanks! My belt tensioner is making noise.Do you have to change the belt tensioner or you could change the pulley?Yes you can replace the pulley without changing the tensioner. When you go to the auto parts store let them know that you just want the pulley or they will try to sell you the tensioner as well. For as your power steering pump goes you don't need to change anything else, but the pump unless the hoses are leaking, then you would need to change them . sense your going to have the pump off you might take a good look at the belt to see if it's okay.My belt tensioner is making noise.Do you have to change the belt tensioner or you could change the pulley? It depend's on wheather you can change the bearing out or not, some time's it is cheaper just to buy the hole tensioner. And your power steering pump, it is advisable to go ahead and change the line's, but not a must. And make sure that the new pump is exactly the ssame in every detail to the old one before you put it on.My belt tensioner is making noise.Do you have to change the belt tensioner or you could change the pulley?`the tensioner and pulley are the same. unless your leaking fluid your pump is ok but the belt may be slipping is it making noise when you turn??? if so its probably your belt. but if its your tensioner you can tell by grabbing it by hand and turning it in the tightening direction. if you can do this by hand your tensioner is shot. ok.My belt tensioner is making noise.Do you have to change the belt tensioner or you could change the pulley?Yes the Tensioner will wear and cause the pulley to make noise. The

Power steering pump does not require the hoses to be replaced unless

ther are leaking. You will need a p.s. pulley remover /installer tool to do this job. You better know what your getting into. Good Luck.My belt tensioner is making noise.Do you have to change the belt tensioner or you could change the pulley?Replace the entire tensioner. Depending on the vehicle MOST tensioners are very easy, only one bolt. As far as the PS pulley, are you sure its the pulley? or the pump? The pulley itself can be changed if the bearing is bad.My belt tensioner is making noise.Do you have to change the belt tensioner or you could change the pulley?some tensioners you can replace the braring, some you cant. and the bearings on a power steering pump are not replaceable mostley. replace whole pumpMy belt tensioner is making noise.Do you have to change the belt tensioner or you could change the pulley?Change the tension-er and pulley. They are one piece. The power steering pump can be changed on its own.My belt tensioner is making noise.Do you have to change the belt tensioner or you could change the pulley?yes

How to make enough room to change serpentine belt?

I have a 05 corolla, I know how to change the serpentine belt but have no idea what or how to make room or get my hands down in the engine compartment to take off the belt and replace it. There's a bunch of stuff in my way. How do mechanics do it? What should I remove that will let me get a better access to tackle this project? How to make enough room to change serpentine belt?I am afraid you do not really know how to replace serpentine belt on your car according to your statement.

Nothing or only thing you need to remove is the engine top cover. That is for more room to reach the belt.

It is a rather simple work, about ten minutes work if you do not need to replace the tensioner. I suppose your car is rather new and the tensioner should be in good working condition.

Better draw a picture how the belt goes over each wheel since I guess you do not do this from time to time. Or you can bear in mind how it goes.

Stand in front of your car, use a 19 mm long box wrench or a 19mm socket and a long rachet to hold the nut shape point on the tensioner (Use a light and observe carefully. You should notice that this nut is not really a nut; it is a nut shape part of the whole metal piece of the tensioner. Further to the back is the real nut that holds the tensioner to the engine body.), pull it backwards or towards you. The tensioner will go downwards and thus releasing the belt; at this time, use your left hand remover the belt off the flywheel near the alternator. Then you can pull it out easily.

Remember, observe carefully how the belt goes before remove it.

Installation is the reverse of removing.

I am afraid it is easier to show how to than explain it clearly.

Hope I can help you a bit.

Good luck. How to make enough room to change serpentine belt?AH yes the pesky items on top of the engines plague Mechanics too you know.

Have you tryed to jack the car up put it on stands? you might have a better chance of coming up from the bottom to install the belt. I had a Camry Clone and you had better luck jacking the car up removing the tire and aaccesss panel inside the wheel well to change the belt. How to make enough room to change serpentine belt?As a mechanic for many years. I have a special tool that has a long handle. It grabs the belt then has a release on it. this gives me the extra length I need to get the belt around the pulleys. I have used a coat hanger connected to a broom handle that I have cut. If you get creative you could make something similar to create the same effect. Good luck!! I know how much of a pain they can be.How to make enough room to change serpentine belt?I recently had a problem with my serpentine tensioner and couldn't figure out how the mechanic would be able to fix it. He took the front tire off which exposed it. If you have a side mount motor, like my Saturn, it will probably help.

  • How often to change your automotive belt?

My father-in-law says the belt should be changed every 50-60,000 miles. My dad says to change it when it's about to break. Is there a timeline or a time to change the belt regularly? Our SUV book says that it has a belt monitoring system so I would imagine that would tell us if something were wrong or going to be wrong. Just wondering because 50-60K miles just doesnt sound right. Thanks in advance. How often to change your automotive belt?Timing belts/chains are usually 60K. You prob mean serpentine belt. You definitely don't want to wait til %26quot;when it's about to break%26quot; for the timing belt or you can start looking at new engines. For the serpentine belt, just look at it every year and if it looks beat, change it, $30.How often to change your automotive belt?im gonna assume the belt your talking about is the timing belt

most people dont replace it till around 100-120kHow often to change your automotive belt?If you mean the fan belt I would say every 5 years. How often to change your automotive belt?If you're talking about the timing belt then 60,000 mi or so is the recommendation of most manufacturers and is a good rule of thumb. Other belts such as the serpentine belt that most cars have that runs from the alternator to the ac compressor to the power steering pump etc should be changed as needed. It's easy to check them. Take a look at the belt on both the smooth side and the underside. If you see cracking change it. It's that simple. How often to change your automotive belt?if its a timing belt, well your best bet is to follow the factory recommendations.if its an accessory belt, well do a visual looking for cracks fraying, etc.if you question anything at all, then change it.no sense in getting stuck on the side of the road for a mere 30 dollars. How often to change your automotive belt?If you mean the timing belt, you need to look your SUV up on the Gates timing belt replacement guide below and see if you have an %26quot;interference%26quot; type engine that is damaged if the belt breaks. If you have a %26quot;free wheeling%26quot; engine, then you can just keep driving until it breaks.

http://www.gates.com/brochure.cfm?brochuHow often to change your automotive belt?I hope KB likes replacing bent intake valves. Always change your timing belt every 60k at least. Better safe than sorry. If you have an interference engine and that belt snaps, its gonna cost a couple grand to fix.

Just eyeball your serpentine belt to determine if it needs to be changed. Check both sides for cracks, fraying on the edges, and stretching.

Is it easy to change a belt tensioner on a 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan?

Every time I drive in the rain, my S-belt keeps on slipping out. I always have to put it back on, so I got a new S-belt and it still slips out whenever I drive in the rain. Does that mean that I have to change the belt tensioner and is it easy to do for a 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan? Any advice will help. Thank you in advance. Is it easy to change a belt tensioner on a 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan?Yes change the belt tensioner before you junk another belt.....easy job, take the bolt out of the center of the tensioner, should come off at this time, align peg of new tensioner with hole, replace bolt, put breaker bar or ratchet in square hole and put the new belt on...

if you need parts go to www.partsamerica.comIs it easy to change a belt tensioner on a 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan?Check the tension of the belt to see if it is the tensioner. Check for slack and if the tensioner is moving rather easily. If either than it is the tensioner. Rather simple job just a bit tight getting to it.Is it easy to change a belt tensioner on a 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan? It sounds like you could use a new tensioner. It is very easy to change. If you've changed your belt yourself than you can handle this without a problem. Is it easy to change a belt tensioner on a 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan? On models equipped with the 3.0L Mitsubishi V6 there are TWO belts. One main ribbed serpentine belt that drives all accessories and one conventional 'v'-belt that drives the A/C compressor with its own tensioner. This particular model was very prone to having the serpentine belt fall off under varying conditions. Chrysler's %26quot;fix%26quot; for this issue was to install a shield on the tensioner to prevent the belt from slipping off.

However, since you mention the model is a Grand Caravan, I'm assuming it is equipped with the 3.3/3.8L V6. On these models there is only ONE belt that drives ALL accessories. The tensioner itself is secured to the accessory mounting bracket by one 15mm nut from behind. To access this may be tricky. It would probably be easier to access this fastener from underneath the vehicle, using a 15mm shallow swivel type socket and LONG 3/8%26quot; drive extension with ratchet. As for the belt. Simply route the belt on all the accessories as they are supposed to go, leaving the smooth idler pulley as to the last when tension is released from the tensioner. Hope this helps.

How do I know when to change my timing belt?

I just bought a used car and have no idea when the timing belt was changed. Went to a body shop and they looked at the belt and said that there is usually a sticker affixed to the belt where it mentions what mileage it was last changed at; however, my car did not have this. I have a 1996 Toyota Corolla with 173,000 miles on it.

I just don't want to get ripped off. How do I know when to change my timing belt?to tell you the truth you should replace it every 90,000 miles. if not at about 100,000 miles you take the risk of it snapping.

But a word to the wise if you ar replacing the belt replace the water pump also. They tend to be connected together, and you would hate to have to pay for more labor on a part that could have been done at the same time.

Good luck with everything. :)How do I know when to change my timing belt?First mistake is you went to a body shop. You should have gone to a mechanic. You can't just look at a timing belt without removing the cover and a few other item's (to gain access). I'm a firm believer if it ain't broke don't fix it. If you car start's ok leave it alone. If it jumped timing then take it to a mechanic and have it replaced ( I would recommend a toyota dealer, you'll probably get a better warranty). My spouse has an 05 toyota 4runner with 160,000 miles and has no timing belt problem. Body shop's are for dent's and paint. If you don't want to get ripped off buy a repair manual on you vehicle and research it. it'll give you step by step instruction'sHow do I know when to change my timing belt?Pull the timing cover off and look at the belt teeth and look at the back of the belt to determine if it looks old and dry. Move the belt in and out to see how much play it has. You need to have experience to determine what you observe. If you have never checked a timing belt before have an experienced mechanic check it out. I'd replace the pulleys and waterpump while you're at it with the mileage you are at.How do I know when to change my timing belt?I would check and see if the belt looks excessively worn or if you are able to see the chords it would need to be changed immediately. Around 100,000 miles most people get the belts changed as if you dont it does sometimes cause serious problems to the motor if it goes out while the car is running. How do I know when to change my timing belt?if the belt is cracked or real weathered looking, you need to change it.it is not that hard to change one.just make sure that you have the crankshaft marked and the camshaft marked. do not turn the the engine over or turn the cam or the crankshaft.good luck

Hi How much does it cost to change a Timing Belt? I have a VW Polo 2000 and the Timing belt wants changing is it expensive to change? i want to buy the belt myself and get a garage to change it.

ThanksHow much does it cost to change a Timing Belt?A good garage won't fit a belt you provide yourself, as they cannot guarantee its quality. In any case, it is the labour which will cost most.

I'd ring around several garages for quotes. Again, a good one will suggest you at least also let them look at the tensioner and maybe other pulleys, depending on how it's set up, while they're at it. This is because it's often false economy just to fit the belt and have to dismantle it all again in the near future.

Thank you very much.Timing belt change on a 1990 geo prism? When I was first learning to do timing belts I was taught to set the crank at top dead center on #1 compression stroke. After the timing covers are removed, take a paint type marker and put a dot on each gear with a corresponding dot on the belt, and mark the top side of it along with an arrow in the direction of rotation. When the old belt is removed, align it with the new belt and make a dot on the new belt in each spot that the old one has. ThanksHow much does it cost to change a timing belt in a car?All of the belt driven accessories at the front of the engine and the timing chain cover will have to be removed. Depending on the mechanic, since this is very labour intensive, this could be several hundered dollars. Expect to pay around five hundred for parts and labour, at minimum.

If you want to save money, you could do this yourself for only the cost of the timing chain. Get a manual such as Haynes for your model and year vehicle. It's just a lot to remove.

What parts are needed for a timing belt change on a Lexus RX 300 2001?

What was your experiense with timing belt change for Subaru Impreza?

This is a major maintenance I got to do and I'd like more information on it.

How important is it to do it early, versus being 10k to 30k over recommended mileage?

Was it fixed right away or did it need adjustments afterwards?

How did the car feel with the new timing belt?

Did you select a particular brand of a timing belt?

What other repairs did you do simultaneously to cut down on cost?

That should keep you busy for a hot minute dear answerer! What was your experiense with timing belt change for Subaru Impreza?Depending on the climate that the car is driven in , I would say that the timing belt should be replaced no later than 90,000 miles. This is to prevent having a timing belt failure that could cause more damage... Especially on a 2.5 DOHC engine, I believe that those are considered %26quot;interference%26quot; engines and if the belt brakes during running, you will most likely bend several valves and that requires cylinder head repair...

There is a possibility that the water pump is driven by the timing belt and if so the labor would be less to replace the pump at the same time as the timing belt as compared to doing it at a different date by itself...

As far as adjustments, the timing belt has a self adjust feature and should not require adjustment..

What was your experiense with timing belt change for Subaru Impreza? For Subarus, the maintenance schedule recommends replacing the timing belt at 105,000 miles.

This is not something to skimp on. Is it going to fail exactly at 105k? Not likely. Is it worth risking your engine? Your call. If the timing belt breaks, you will be looking at new cylinder heads and a engine rebuild. Your car isn't going to feel any different with a new timing belt, unless your timing happened to be off beforehand. This is just a wear item that needs to be replaced. There's no %26quot;adjustments%26quot; unless you screw up the timing. There's really no benefit to going to anything other than the OEM belt, unless you just like the peace of mind a kevlar belt might give you. You'll also want to replace the water pump, the oil pump, timing belt tensioner, and idler pulleys while you're in there.

I don't consider this the easiest task for the average shadetree mechanic, so depending on your skill level, you might want to consider going to a mechanic for this particular maintenance. What was your experiense with timing belt change for Subaru Impreza? It is very important to have the timing belt changed. If it breaks while driving it could damage your engine. Take it to the dealer they will do it right. Follow that maintenance schedule in your manual that is all you need to do. Subaru will warranty the parts for 1 year. If within the one year that car is damaged due to say a faulty part that was installed during a service Subaru covers that. No other garage will do thatWhat was your experiense with timing belt change for Subaru Impreza?Timing belt replacement is recommended for cars with 60K miles (for 1997 and older cars) ...or at 90K miles for 1998 cars and newer) When a timing belt breaks, your engine stops. That is why it should be done before that risk occurs.

What other things to change when changing timing belt?

i'm taking my car to get it's timing belt changed as a precaution because the car's got a high mileage.i was told that when changing the timing belt it's also good to change the fuel pump as well or is it the water pump?

i'm a bit confused.do you have also make these changes or is just changing the timing belt alone sufficient? What other things to change when changing timing belt? It's the water pump that you mean not the fuel pump.If you have plenty of money change the lot but i would never throw good parts away for the sake of what if.Would you change your brake shoes if they were only half worn, just in case. Would you change your radiator if it was 5 years old.No of course not ! ! If the water pump bearing shows no sign of wear or noise and a decent mechanic will be able to tell, leave it alone.A new water pump can leak and if the timing belt is adjusted too tight the bearing in that can fail just as easily as on an old one. What other things to change when changing timing belt?the water pump is driven off the timing belt in many vehicles. this is true it is good to replace that as well. they have bearings and will only last so long. it is so hard to get to them you should replace them any time you have them in reach. its vice versa with your timing belt. if you had to replace your water pump, replace your timing belt. timing belt faliure can be detremental to your vehicles head and valves. do not ever put off routine maintenence for the timing belt, recommended 80k miles on most vehicles. if you do to save a few bucks you will lose much more than that when it breaks and destroys your vehicles top end.

just watch out for the mechanic charging you too much on labor. if he will replace your water pump there is no need technically to charge you for the timing belt labor, because to get to your water pump you must remove and replace your timing belt. so make yourself aware of this, and try to reach a fair agreement with them. What other things to change when changing timing belt? When replacing a timing belt, buy the timing set. This includes (in most cases)The guides, the idler, the tensioner and/or the sprockets. You also need to replace the water pump and crankshaft seal, which usually comes in the timing cover gasket set. What other things to change when changing timing belt?with your astra you buy a timing belt kit which includes the pulleys tensioner and the cam shaft seals always replace these parts all together and the water pump as well is a good thing to change not really expensive but if the bearings break then big problems the job should take around 5

in the last week i have worked on 2 of these cars one was a precaution and the other the tensioner had seized and stripped the belt causing valves to hit the pistonsWhat other things to change when changing timing belt?Timing belt and water pump because the timing belt drives the water pump.

Parts typically replaced are timing belt, and water pump. I usually change the belt tensioner for every other timing belt replacement job. If you mail order, the part should run under $100. Esp. Timing belt, low end I found for my civic was $40, and high end was $120 for Honda OE belt. Most mail order place had it for $80 - $90 range.

Doing this yourself isn't too difficult. The hardest thing is removing the crankshaft pulley nut. It is torqued at 140 ft/lbs and is pain to remove without some holding tool.

If you have not change the timing belt before, then you might want someone to show you how to take it out and put it in. What I usually do is set the engine to TDC, and run a paint marker between the belt, and cam pulley. Then take the belt out, transfer the markings to the new belt, and install and verify the alignment after. After the belt installation, take out the spark plugs, put socket over the crank bolt, and spin it to check for valve/piston contact. If you remember to check, there is no way you can damage the engine. Can the idler pulley on a Honda Civic 99 go bad after a timing belt change?

Took the car to get a timing belt change. There were no problems before the service. After the service, there is a rattling sound when the car is idle. Can the idler pulley on a Honda Civic 99 go bad after a timing belt change?the obvious answer is to take the car back to the technician who did the work on it and have them isolate the noise. there are several things that need to be removed and reinstalled to replace the timing belt and %26quot;new%26quot; rattles are usually caused by something that was reinstalled but not tightened properly. the chances of the idler being the source of your noise are remote. more likely its that a shroud is loose or that you have a new noise that is unrelated to the timing belt (you didn't mention how long between the t-belt and the noise). Rattles on civics are ususally from exhaust heat shields or from deteriorated catalytic converters.

Is 600 dollars about right for timing belt change on a 1997 Prelude?

    For 600 they change:

    Timing Belt

    Water Pump

    Drive Belts

    Coolant Flush

    4-5 hours of labor

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx?br>

    COST = $600

Is that good or no?Is 600 dollars about right for timing belt change on a 1997 Prelude?Considering the timing belt and the waterpump can be changed at the same time, it should be a little less. It took me about 1-2 hours to change them both ( had a problem getting the crank off)

If you don't have experience with doing this then have a shop do it. Everything else can be done at home for a cheaper price with everyday tools.

your ac belt and alternator belt can be changed at home just by loosening up the bolts removing the belts and putting on the new one and then tightening up the bolts again ( less than 30 minutes)

the fluids can be drained into a jug or something and refilled in about 30 minutes also

If you can do these things alone and have a shop repair the pump and timing belt, it should be considerably less. prolly 250$

but yes, if a shop had to fix everything that you mentioned for you, then it would be roughly around 450-600 for parts and labor.

I hope this helps, thank you for reading and for the question. Is 600 dollars about right for timing belt change on a 1997 Prelude?Coolant is easy to do yourself. Thank you.How much should I pay for a time belt change on a 1992 Lexus LS400?With all due respect to %26quot;December M,%26quot; do NOT follow that advice. Preventive maintenance is always better (and less expensive) than corrective maintenance. The flat rate for changing the timing belt is 4.6 hours. Find a reputable garage that will do the work, check them out with the Better Business Bureau, and try to find one with the lowest labor rate. At $100/hr, the labot would be $460.00. The price for the timing belt may be somewhere near $175 - $200.

How often do water pumps and their gaskets last? Can It wait until the next timing belt change? My car has 60,000 and is due to have the timing belt done but due to the high price of the job I was wondering If I could skip the water pump for now. What happens if the water pump fails? Thank you.Do you really need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt?Guy above never really answered the question. So here goes..

No.. you do not need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt. You can, while you are in there. It saves you the cost of the labor, you only pay for the part that way.

Hope that helps!Do you really need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt?Water pumps and there seals last quite along time with regular maintenance. Some times, the life or your vehicle! You water pump wont fail cause your changing the timing belt. I would just have it cleaned out and re-fitted to your car after the timing belt is done. No need to worry about it.

If it does fail (witch it shouldn't) your car would over heat as it would not be pumping the coolant through your engine block to keep it cool.

Thanks!Do you really need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt?I'm not sure what the previous responder meant by proper maintenance on a water pump and gasket. Other than changing the coolant there is very little you can do the maintain a water pump. There are lubricants available but since it is a sealed bearing they are basically useless.

Most of your repair cost on a timing belt is labor, which will be repeated if you have to have the water pump done later. The days of lifetime water pumps are gone, and since you got 60K on this one I'd replace it and you should be fine for the next 60K. Remember, if it goes (and since it's buried you probably won't know until it fails completely) and you don't recognize it immediately; you'll be paying for a rebuilt engine. It's a great investment.Do you really need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt?If you do a regular maintenance for the water pump it will work for many years in your car ,so you can skip it for now even if you will do an over all repair of your engine.Do you really need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt? No. At 120k , it mignt be a worthwhle preventive idea, if it's one that takes a lot of labor to get at. A simple car w/o AC or PS, it's usually not that big a deal to get at as needed - when it starts to drip.Do you really need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt?the gasket will last until it starts to leak thats when u need to change it

How much does it cost to change a timing belt and water pump on my a car?

how often do i need to change a timing belt and water pump on my car? also, how much should it cost? should i have it done at the dealers or at a small mechanic shop if i chose to? which would be best? what are steps when having timing belt change? How much does it cost to change a timing belt and water pump on my a car?The timing belt needs to be change according to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule. Lacking that knowledge, 60,000 miles is a safe interval.

The water pump does not need to be changed unless if fails.

It's not possible to quote a cost on changing either. Some are fairly quick and easy -- SOHC I-4s without the silent shafts can be as little as $150.00 for the timing belt, and about the same for the water pump. A bit less if both are changed at the same time, possibly. A more complex engine such as a DOHC 4 with silent shafts or a DOHC V-6 or V-8mcan be much more expensive -- several hundred $$$ or more because there may be multiple belts and getting the timing right is a chore. A few are downright nasty as the engine needs to be pulled to get enough room to work on them -- early Hyundai Sonatas were that way.

Any competent mechanic can do the job, you don't normally need to go a dealer. That said, the dealer is likely to have factory trained staff and may be familiar with shortcuts and have any special tools needed.

The exact procedure is specific to the individual engine. You need a service manual to get it right. Cam timing is hyper-critical. Mess that up and at best the engine won't run. At worst, you can destroy the engine if valves hit the pistons. How much does it cost to change a timing belt and water pump on my a car?Not knowing the car and the market you live in...

    $3-500 is a good guess...

Call the dealer and price them, sometimes they are so experienced doing a job they will quote less then an independent repair shop...

    Usually not though.

As your friends for a referral.

BobHow much does it cost to change a timing belt and water pump on my a car?check the ads in a free paper like the LA weekly or SF guardian.

they always seem to say when you should do it and what they charge. the water pump shouldnt be much extra (100?)since they are already doing the timing belt.

call a mechanic you trust and ask them. If you do not have one then ask your friends who is good.

the dealer will rip you off on price, it can easily cost double there

would you rater pay someone inexperienced at the dealer $100 per hour or someone who has done it for 40 years $60 per hour and he does it faster anyways (so it costs less)(and they take pride in their work)(and they will replace other parts that need it for cheap and leave pieces that are still good because they know)

The dealer might charge you for 6 hours because the book says that even if they only spend 4 doing it!

a VERY rough guess would be 600+100 for water pump

you do not need to replace timing belt very often. I am thinking 60,000 miles.

look up in owners manual or shop manual for your car for replacement interval.

good luckHow much does it cost to change a timing belt and water pump on my a car?If it's Japanese, every 90,000 miles. If American, every 60,000 miles.

Just recently changed belt and water pump on my Honda for $400 at an independent. Honda Accord 1995, change timing belt and water pump at the same time?

I've done 200,000km from new in %26quot;severe conditions%26quot; [ ie hot Australian climate all year ] and had one timing belt change. Now due for the 2nd. One mechanic reckons to replace water pump at the same time as preventative maintenance seeing he's got that part of the engine opened up. Another mechanic reckons I could get 300,000km out of a water pump. The pump is not making any noise at this time. Any help appreciated.Honda Accord 1995, change timing belt and water pump at the same time?On your Honda the WP is driven by the timing belt. Very little extra labor is involved in replacing it as long as they are already in there to do the belt anyway. The WP may be working just fine now, but if it fails next week or next month or next year you'll have to pay all that labor cost again to go back in and change it out.

I always recommend replacing the WP on Honda's with every-other T-belt change, but it is preventive, not required maintenance and therefore entirely up to you. Just remember that if you opt not to replace it and it fails later on, you can't blame the mechanic. He gave you the option.

It doesn't cost a dime more in labor to change it, merely the cost of the part.

We always change the water pump.Honda Accord 1995, change timing belt and water pump at the same time? You have a real smart mechanic keep him,he has your best interests at heart, makes good sense to replace pump at the same time, water pumps give very little warning before they spit there guts, noise is not a good indicator of worn pump anyway.Been a mechanic for 46yrs in CanadaHonda Accord 1995, change timing belt and water pump at the same time?If that pump dies, it could take the timing belt with it, which would likely cause severe damage to the valves.

It's very smart to replace it before it fails.Honda Accord 1995, change timing belt and water pump at the same time?Always change the pump. Yiou've been lucky so far - I've never found a pump that lasted for 200,000 km. Otherwise, when the pump goes, you;'ll have to have the timing belt removed again to access the pump...basically paying for the belt replacement twice.

  • What causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change?

My car is a 1997 Toyota Avalon that was recently tuned up. It is a car in perfect mechanical condition until recently when I had my timing belt and water pump changed. The engine light is on and the idle is rough. An Auto Zone diagnostic test determined that there is misfiring in cyclinders 1,3 and 5. Could this be related to the timing belt change, and will it cause damage to the engine? Of course the mechanic that did the work has closed shop and disappeared. What causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change?Yes, that sounds exactly it. Especially since it involves all the cylinders on the same side of the engine, which I'm guessing is a V-6. Sounds like they slightly miss timed the cam for that set of cylinders. As far as damage goes, if it hasn't hurt the engine yet, it probably won't. That doesn't mean you should continue to drive it. I'd look into having someone re-do the timing belt. What causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change?timing is off and valves are worped thats why you dont have any compretion it will idel rough if it is just a hair offWhat causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change?Make sure that the plug wires are on correctly and in the correct order and check the plug gap it should be 0.44 and the timing is 10degrees btc couldn't find the firing order but some one should have it make sure that all of this is correct then if you are still having this problem then go back to whoever done the work lots of luck!!!!!!!!!!What causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change? The timing is off a little bit. Sometimes the timing belt stretches a bit after it gets put on (a competent mechanic should know this) and the timing gear is now probably off about a tooth. It won't really hurt the engine, but the engine won't run as smoostly as it should and you won't be able to pass an emissions test with it that way. What causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change?it sounds like a timing issue i am not sure if the engine in that car is a interferance engine or not you could have possible bent valves if it is my advice would be to seek a qualified mechanic i hope this will help the right cam is probably off 2 teethWhat causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change?the timing belt was probably installed incorrectly and needs to be fixed asap. and yes it will damage your engine if left alone and you are driving a lot. What causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change? It's definetly a timing problem. Get if fixed quick...

The 1997 passport to performance (scheduled maintenance guide) for the Camry might be your best bet.

All Camrys sold in the US from 1990-2001 have a timing belt, not a timing chain.

    Toyota's FAQ: %26quot;Does my vehicle have a timing belt or a timing chain?%26quot;

    http://www.toyota.com/help/faqs/service-

For model year 1998 and older vehicles (such as yours), Toyota recommends inspecting the timing belt at the initial 60,000 mile or 4 year interval, and re-inspect at every 15,000 mile interval thereafter. But, since the costs for inspection is about the same as that of replacement, you should probably just change it at every 60,000 mile or 4 year interval.

    Toyota's FAQ: %26quot;What maintenance is required on my timing belt?%26quot;

    http://www.toyota.com/help/faqs/service-

So, if it has been more than 4 years or 60,000 miles since you last had your timing belt changed, you should probably have it replaced.

As for whether or not you can change the timing belt yourself, that would depend on your mechanical aptitude... If you have to ask, then you probably should just take your car to a professional. How do you know if you need a timing belt change for your car i have a 96 toyota camary?Deer Park is right. If your car is idling funny, it won't be the timing belt that causes that. Get it tuned up. You should change your timing belt every 60,000 miles. That is the recommended service interval for the timing belt service. The service also includes replacing the water pump, seals, and other belts. Still the idle problem sounds like either you need a tuneup, fuel filter change, or fuel injection service. How do you know if you need a timing belt change for your car i have a 96 toyota camary?well if you have no paper work for it. then open the hood and look at your engine. on the right side of the, or left if your standing in front looking at the engine. look at the side of the engine where the belts are. you will notice there is a plastic cover and where that cover meets the metal part of the engine, this is the timing cover. there should be a sticker on the top that says the milage when it was last replaced. and it is 100 000 kms or 62 500 miles. it should be replaced. How do you know if you need a timing belt change for your car i have a 96 toyota camary? That sounds like an electrical problem ie: spark plugs, leads, distributor.

Your wasting your time and money if you are hoping to get rid of the shakes, by replacing your timing belt.

What is the recommended/(usual practice) mileage at which a timing belt change is recommended/mandatory on a 2003 Pontiac Sunfire? Also, what is the normal mileage interval on changing the Transmission fluid on 2003 Sunfire? At what mileage does a timing belt change is recommended on a Pontiac Sunfire 2003?The Timing belt should be done at around 80,000 miles. It should be listed in your owners manual. Also, the transmission fluid I recommend being done at 30,000 miles. This is a great thing to do to extend the life of your transmission greatly! At what mileage does a timing belt change is recommended on a Pontiac Sunfire 2003?This question arises time and time again. You need to try and find out when it was changed if ever was, If not work out the mileage. It is cheaper to change a belt than pay for a wrecked motor. An inspection of the belt may show some light to this question. The same applies to your transmisson question. As it depends what conditions your vehicle has been used.Obviously oil looses its vescosity the more work it does.

What parts should i change in order to completely do a timing belt change on an '01 mitsubishi galant?

I own a 2001 mitsubishi galant es, 4 cylinder, and i just reached 150,000 miles and would need to do a timing belt change asap because the vibration of the engine is increasing and the change of the belt is needed at this point. I would however like to know what are all the parts, besides the water pump, that i need to change when doing the timing belt change. Thank you for your help. What parts should i change in order to completely do a timing belt change on an '01 mitsubishi galant?Replace the balance shaft belt and timing belt, check the water pump weep hole for coolant leakage because if you have it that far down it would be easier to replace.

It was rare for the idler or tensoner bearings to be bad but check them for bearing roughness anyhow of course.
